My personal story…..
I still remember vividly in my mind that when I was around 4 years old. I used to walk to the lolly shop, which was just located right next door to my home to buy lollies. I’d ate lollies and chocolates all day and often refused to eat dinner because I’d lost my appetite. I had tooth decay and was hyperactive. It also didn’t help that I was bottle-fed with sugary milo drinks 2-3 times a day… I don’t blame my parents. Coming from a small rural town back then, most of us didn’t really know any better about food and nutrition.

When I entered high school as a teenager, I became very conscious about my weight and body image leading to feelings of insecurity about my body. I tried all strategies wanting to lose the baby fat that has wrapped around my arms and thighs. I tried to starve myself from time to time with the thought that eating very little would make me look skinnier. I even tried taking laxatives and slimming pills to lose weight. As with any unhealthy means to lose weight, excessive calorie restriction without a good understanding of how foods affect my weight did not work. This unhealthy relationship of food and body image led to greater cravings for more sugary junk foods.
Years later I realised that I had a sugar addiction. Yes, believe it or not, I was overloaded with sugar during my earlier stage of life. Most people may not know it, but sugar has the same detrimental effect on the brain as cocaine (That Sugarbook). Yes, sugar has caused so much damage to my health during my childhood, without me or my parents even knowing it. That was one of the main reasons why I was not able to eat properly, and never succeeded in weight loss despite of eating less.
I was a sugar addict...
Turning point in life…
At the age of 19, I discovered my strong love and passion for food and nutrition. My inspiration of becoming a dietitian stems from the desire to help people discover how a healthy diet and lifestyle could help prevent and treat chronic diseases, promote wellbeing and longevity.
Not being eligible to start a nutrition course where I lived, I went on to complete a Microbiology degree, which is the study of microbes such as bacteria, viruses, yeast and fungi and their interactions with humans, animals, plants and the environment.
During my final year at the university, a group of my university mates and myself were assigned to complete a thesis on the identification of some pathogenic bacteria on different meats from the local markets and butcher’s shops. To my surprise, I found extremely high numbers of microorganisms particularly in pork and processed meats. Not to be a sensationist, but I was alarmed and very bothered by the pathogenic bacteria growing on the meat.
I quit my job and went on pursuing my dream to be a dietitian...
After finishing university, I went on to work in a lab as a pharmaceutical Microbiologist. Very quickly though, I decided that I didn’t like the idea of being constrained by four walls for the rest of my life. I quit my job and went on pursuing my dream to be a nutritionist. I was then offered a nutritional consultant position at a renown organic wholesale distributor company. During my career life, I have never ceased to continue learning and enhancing my skills and knowledge in food and nutrition.
I went on completing a medical missionary course and then worked as a health educator at a wellness lifestyle centre in Malaysia called Aenon Health Care. I was amazed by the remarkable success of the wellness centre in improving the health of many people through diet and lifestyle changes. The combination of bacterial contamination in meat that I had previously discovered, and the positive health effects that I saw a wholesome plant based diet had on people since then, made the choice of becoming a vegan very clear to me.
Over many years, I have go on to help clients develop healthy eating habits by educating them up-to-date nutrition information and continuous advice and support, which allowed them to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Complementing this, I went further to complete a Master’s in Nutrition and Dietetics in Australia with a great passion for empowering people to improve their health and believes that the root cause of most health problems is lifestyle, especially diet. I have taken this passion and used it to create Back To Basics Dietetics (BBDiet), which is the platform I use today to help as many people as possible achieve a healthy lifestyle.
With over 13 years experience working in the healthcare industry, I have seen great transformation on many people who are willing to give their health a go by taking that very first step towards healthy living.
I believe that even the smallest actions can lead you down a healthier path.

Healthy wishes,
Angeline
